What is AdSense?

Google's AdSense for Content automatically delivers classified-style ads that are relevant to your audience and your site content.

Often these ads are so well-matched to your niche and your page topic that your readers find them to be a genuinely useful resource.

Once your account has been approved by Google, putting the ads on your site is easy.

You simply choose the details of how you want your site's AdSense ads formatted, then copy and paste some javascript into your page's HTML - and voila, you're serving up ads.

Whenever someone clicks on one of the AdSense ads on your site, you earn anywhere from a few cents to several dollars, depending on the value of the ad's main keyword.

For publishers, serving AdSense ads on your site is one of the easiest ways to monetize.

Should You Monetize with AdSense or Not?

There are positives and negatives to placing AdSense ads on your site. You may want AdSense in some areas of your site but not in others.

On the positive side:

* You'll earn money every time someone clicks on one of your AdSense ads, regardless of whether they actually buy anything from the advertiser.

* You don't have to work out a deal with the advertiser; just paste your AdSense javascript into your page's HTML and you're done.

* It's a good way to monetize topics that don't really have any relevant affiliate products or programs.

On the negative side:

* After all your efforts to build targeted traffic to your site, you could wind up handing that traffic directly over to your competitor's site - via an AdSense click that pays you only a few cents.

* AdSense ads can distract customers away from doing what you really want them to do - especially on pages where you're trying to get a specific action from your visitor, such as signing up for your newsletter or buying your ebook.

* The AdSense ads that show up on your page may have content you don't want on your site.
